Profile / Bio

An award winning chef in the international culinary competition arena, Chef Yen is currently the Executive Chef with Unilever Foodsolutions South East Asia and Singapore, where he specializes in the area of culinary training, research and development, applications and customer development for the foodservice and food manufacturing , consumer goods industries.

An alumnus of the Singapore Hotel Association Tourism and Educational Centre (SHATEC), Chef Yen has also pursued postgraduate studies in continuing education programs for professional chefs jointly introduced by the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and Temasek Polytechnic.

Prior to joining Unilever Foodsolutions, Chef Yen began his career at the former Westin Stamford and Westin Plaza (Now Swissôtel the Stamford and Fairmont Singapore) upon graduation where he honed his culinary skills at the hotels’ various food and beverage outlets. Next follow by Givaudan, the world leading flavours and fragrances MNC where he was trained in the research and development and flavours application. Chef Yen spent 4 years with the company in the Foodservice and Savoury department.

In the 2010 APEC Global leaders summit in Singapore, Chef Yen was one of the 4 Singaporeans chefs invited to create the menu and cook for the world leaders like Prime minster Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore, President Hu Jin Tao of China, President Obama of the US and many more.

A keen culinary competition enthusiast, Chef Yen has established a distinguish record of achievements in both local and international culinary competitions’ arena. From Europe to Middle East and Asia, he has received outstanding recognition as an individual competitor as well as culinary excellence with the Singapore National Culinary Team.

As a Team Captain and Member for the Singapore National Culinary Team, Chef Yen has helped to put Singapore on the world culinary map through Gold medals success in several high profile prestigious competition events like:
 

  1. Team Captain for Singapore junior national culinary team at Ika Hoga, Efurt Germany, Culinary Olympics 2000. (Gold medallist)
  2. Team Captain for Singapore national culinary team at Salon Culinaire Dubai 2005 (Overall Champion).
  3. Team member for Singapore national culinary team at Culinary World Master Basel, Switzerland 2005
    (Overall Champion. Best Cold Display and 2nd runner up in Hot Cooking).
  4. Team Captain for Singapore national culinary team at the Restaurants of the Nations, Western Australia Oceanafest 2007 (Overall Champion).
  5. Team Captain for Singapore national culinary team at the IKA, Culinary Olympics 2008
    (Overall 4th of 32 countries placing and World champion for Patisserie).
  6. Team Captain for Singapore national culinary team at the Food and Hotel Asia Culinary Challenge 2010.
    (Best National team, Best Cold Display, Best Hot Cooking and Best Dessert of 8 national teams).
  7. Team Captain for Singapore national culinary team at the Food and Hotel Asia Culinary Challenge 2010.
    (Overall Champion for Battle for the Lion trophy where the Top 3 scoring nations compete in a Black Box basket to create a 50pax 3 course menu from scratch. The last time Singapore won the Lion trophy was in 1992).
  8. Team Captain for Singapore national culinary team at the Expogast Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg 2010.
