World Chefs Without Borders: Singapore Chefs Raise Funds for Malaysia's Floods

The Singapore Chefs’ Association (SCA) has risen swiftly to the needs of their Malaysian neighbour by raising SGD6,480 within the SCA committee in a short span of time.

The project, titled “Malaysia Flood Aid Appeal” is committed to raising funds for the needs of the worst flood in the last 30 years of Malaysian history. It has devastated most of Northern Malaysia, stranding up to 13,000 people and leaving them without homes, fresh water and electricity. More flash floods are expected in the next few weeks.

Says Leons Tan, Singapore ambassador for World Chefs Without Borders, “We explored different ways of raising funds to meet the needs in Malaysia. As this requires urgent help, we reached out to the committee. We are glad that everyone helped readily in their own way, contributing from their own pockets, or finding ways to raise money. For example, Chef Tony Khoo sold his cookbooks to Angliss Singapore and raised $2,500. The Mandarin Oriental Singapore also passed the hat around and the brigade came forward with $600, and the Singapore Junior Chefs Club raised $480.”

Willment Leong, President of World Chefs Without Borders, shared, “As chefs, we believe that we should always help thy neighbours.  We have a global network, but nothing beats neighbourly assistance.

The funds will be passed to the Chef Association of Malaysia (CAM), who will take charge of administering the amount for the needs on the ground.
